The Kia Sportage is something of a model student. It's practical, easy to use and easy to drive. You get lots of standard kit and a long warranty. If you want a family SUV, you'd need a good reason not to have the Sportage on your shortlist. Petrol and diesel engines are available among older models, but newer Sportages are mostly self-charging or plug-in hybrids. These electrified models are easy to recommend since they're smoother, faster and more economical than entry-level versions.

Peugeot 5008

The 5008 is the biggest SUV in Peugeot's lineup, with seven seats and a solid, upright look. This most recent 5008 has only been on sale since 2025 but, already, nearly new mild-hybrid models are available with £15,000 or more off their list price. That saving is even larger for fully electric e-5008 models, which see steeper first-year depreciation. Just like the dramatic exterior styling, the interior has a contemporary, chic ambiance with a mix of textiles and glossy surfaces across the parts you look and touch. On the road, the 5008 feels lighter than its size suggests, partly due to the easy handling and partly thanks to its small, flickable steering wheel.

Renault Austral

Yes, the Renault Austral may be yet another hybrid family SUV, but it's arguably the most complete product the French brand has released in years. The cabin is comfortable, plush and neatly designed. So, too, is the driving experience with easy, predictable handling and a luxuriously soft edge to its suspension. All versions come with self-charging-hybrid tech that's allegedly borrowed from the company's Alpine F1 team. You probably won't be hassling racers around Silverstone, but it's superb in the real world with muscular electrical assistance and a smooth swap over between electric and petrol power.

Volkswagen T-Roc

For many UK drivers, the Volkswagen T-Roc will be the 'Goldilocks' model in the lineup. It's just large enough to use as a family car, but without the bulk or height of the larger Tiguan. That makes the T-Roc easier to drive in the city and less intimidating when faced with a tight parking space. Good quality used examples are available for less than £15,000, while nearly new models hover somewhere above £20,000 – around £10,000 off their list price. Citroen C3 Aircross
- Practical considering its size

We hear occasional complaints that modern cars are too big, too complex, too fussy. If you share this opinion, you might appreciate the Citroen C3 Aircross. This is a straightforward family SUV that focuses solely on practicality and comfort. Its floppy handling won't win any races, and the rugged plastic interior panels won't set any hearts ablaze, but it works hard to isolate you and your passengers from road bumps. There's also a simple engine range with manual and automatic options, and a fully electric e-C3 Aircross with up to 247 miles of range on a charge.

MG HS

The previous MG HS was spacious and well equipped but couldn't totally hide its cheap car origins. This latest HS, however, feels at least as premium as its main rivals and, in some cases, actually outstrips them with its comfy faux leather-trimmed cabin and all-encompassing standard kit. Like other Chinese-made SUVs we've tested, the HS prioritises rear passenger space over boot space. Of course, there's still plenty of cargo capacity but shifting the rear seats back means back seat passengers get limo-like room to stretch out. There's a choice of turbo petrol, self-charging hybrid and plug-in hybrid engines with the latter two offering strong economy.

Dacia Duster
- Affordable pricing
- Rugged charm
- Practical cabin
If you want an SUV on a budget, it's hard to argue with the Dacia Duster. The latest model retains the back-to-basics ruggedness of its predecessors, but somehow makes it look deliberate and desirable rather than cheap. It only takes up the same space on the road as a typical family hatchback, but the cabin is big and boxy, permitting more space for people and their things. Straightforward petrol engines are available and include optional four-wheel drive, but we think the self-charging-hybrid versions are easier to live with everyday. Need even more space? Toyota RAV4

The Toyota RAV4 has been on sale for more than 30 years. You don't earn that kind of longevity without having some real substance, which is why so many RAV4 owners hold on to their cars for such a long time. For starters, it's big and spacious for all your family SUV needs, and features the same easy-to-understand interface we've found on all recent Toyota models – minus its slightly old-school infotainment system. The self-charging hybrid setup is responsive, powerful and efficient, without any recharging faff. The Skoda Karoq is one of our all-time favourite SUVs for the way it effortlessly appeals to the head. Things start off strong with an enormous cabin that boasts rear seat space that rivals luxury cars priced several times higher than the Karoq. Then there's the massive boot – we're yet to meet a dog large enough that it wouldn't fit back there, and you can be confident that no airport run or trip to the tip will outfox the spacious Skoda. Capping this all off is the Karoq's comfortable and easygoing driving experience that makes long journeys melt away.

BMW X1
- Modern, tech-laden dashboard

The latest BMW X1 arrived at the end of 2022, so is starting to show up in greater numbers on the used market. That means you're getting one of BMW's most up-to-date cars, with the latest infotainment system and cabin design, without the price premium you'd pay for a brand-new model. As you'd hope from a car bearing the blue-and-white badge, the X1 feels unflappably stable in day-to-day driving with a surprisingly sporty edge if you push the car harder. Despite being the smallest BMW SUV, the X1 has ample room for a family of four, with lots of rear passenger space and a boot that'll swallow pushchairs without a fight.
