BMW makes a huge number of 4x4s. You have the obvious ones in the brand's SUV line-up: The X1, X2, X3, X4, X5, X6 and X7 SUVs are all available with the brand's xDrive four-wheel drive system. But you can also add xDrive to the brand's non-SUV models. So the 1 Series, 2 Series, 3 Series, 4 Series, 5 Series, 6 Series, 7 Series and 8 Series can all be specced with four-wheel-drive systems.

It depends on your circumstances – if you often find yourself driving across sodden campsites, car parks or struggling in icy winters, then BMW xDrive's 4x4 abilities will undoubtedly help you out. But bear in mind a two-wheel-drive car will be more fuel efficient, and with a set of decent winter tyres will usually make better progress than a four-wheel-drive car on summer tyres.

BMW's xDrive four-wheel-drive system will help you get moving in the snow, but you still need to fit a decent set of winter tyres to stay safe and make the most of the system. Remember that four-wheel-drive systems don't help you stop more quickly either – you need those winter tyres!

Yes it does – the extra weight and complexity of any four-wheel-drive system increases fuel consumption, and BMW's xDrive is no different. Whereas a two-wheel-drive BMW 3 Series with a 2.0-litre diesel engine can get about 61mpg, an xDrive version will get more like 56mpg.
